A. J. Liebling

Abbott Joseph Liebling was born in New York City on 18 October 1904 and was associated with The New Yorker from 1935 until his death on 28 December 1963. He wrote the magazine’s “Wayward Press” feature, a running critique of American newspapers, and is also the man who stuck Chicago with the nickname “the Second City.” Outside press criticism he is best remembered for The Sweet Science (1956), his collection of boxing essays.
