A. J. Muste

1885–1967 · American pacifist minister & labor activist

Abraham Johannes Muste was a Dutch-born American clergyman who moved from Calvinist preaching to militant labor organizing and finally to radical Christian pacifism, becoming one of the 20th century’s leading nonviolence advocates. His credo — “There is no way to peace, peace is the way” — became the template later writers adapted to happiness, enlightenment and other ideals. It was never a saying of the Buddha.
