Albert Camus

1913–1960 · French-Algerian novelist, essayist & playwright; Nobel Prize in Literature, 1957

Born in French Algeria to a nearly illiterate mother and a father killed in the First World War, Albert Camus grew up poor in Belcourt, Algiers, and never lost the Mediterranean light that saturates his essays. He edited the Resistance paper Combat under the Occupation and won the Nobel Prize in 1957, three years before dying in a car crash at forty-six. He is best known for L’Étranger and La Peste, but the lyrical essays — Noces, L’Été — are where the sun, the sea and the “invincible summer” actually live.
