Hammond and Warren wrote the song together, and it is one of the earliest of Warren’s enormous run of hits — a writer who would go on to be nominated for the Academy Award more times than almost anyone alive. Hammond, a hitmaker in his own right since the early 1970s, eventually recorded it himself for his 2010 album Legend. Because the composition is theirs rather than any performer’s, the song was free to travel: Luther Ingram, Aswad, Bonnie Tyler, Neil Diamond and Ace of Base all recorded it inside eight years.
