Amy Winehouse (1983–2011) sang lead on Mark Ronson’s 2007 cover of ‘Valerie’, and her voice so completely redefined the song that it is now hers in the public mind. The record is properly credited to Ronson featuring Winehouse, and it is a cover of The Zutons — but after her death in 2011 it settled into memory as one of her signature recordings, helped along by its place in the 2015 documentary Amy. The performance is the reason for the confusion; the only error is forgetting it was a cover at all.
