The composition is credited to Anthony B. Stephens, Arnecia Michelle Harris and John Bellamy. They are not a separate party from the original billing: The Source was their working alias, which is why the 1986 label copy reads “The Source featuring Candi Staton.” Because the video producers who commissioned Staton’s vocal had no money to pay her, they gave her half the copyright and publishing instead — a decision that, once the song became a perennial UK hit, turned out far better for her than a session fee. The name later passed to a different owner: producer John Truelove adopted “The Source” as his own moniker in 1991 for the remixes that finally charted.
