Anton Wildgans

1881–1932 · Austrian poet, playwright and twice director of the Vienna Burgtheater

Anton Wildgans was an Austrian poet and dramatist whose work blends realism, neo-romanticism and expressionism around the ordinary human condition. His plays Armut (1914), Liebe (1916) and Dies Irae (1918) made his name, and he twice directed Vienna’s Burgtheater, in 1921–1922 and again in 1930–1931. He is almost unknown to English readers — which is exactly why a single line of his has spent decades travelling under somebody else’s name.
