Arthur G. Lewis

Arthur G. Lewis was a little-known American writer who penned an aphoristic feature called Stub Ends of Thoughts. His epigram about the fighting spirit of a small dog appeared in the April 1911 issue of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad’s passenger magazine, Book of the Royal Blue. From that modest column the saying spread anonymously for a century, evolving into the polished modern proverb and eventually being misattributed to far more famous names.
