Bernard M. Baruch

1870–1965 · American financier & adviser to U.S. presidents

Bernard Mannes Baruch was a Wall Street financier and statesman who advised presidents from Woodrow Wilson to Harry Truman and popularized the term “Cold War.” He was famous for his aphorisms, and by the 1940s the seating-plan quip “those who matter don’t mind, and those who mind don’t matter” was being attributed to him. He did not, however, author the longer “Be who you are and say what you feel” sentence now pinned on Dr. Seuss.
