Bernie Wayne wrote more than a thousand songs and a shelf of jingles, among them “There She Is”, long the Miss America theme, and the Chock full o’Nuts tune. He began “Blue Velvet” after a stay at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, Virginia, where a guest dressed in blue velvet kept catching his eye; Lee Morris shared the credit. Wayne later recalled being told at the premiere of Lynch’s film that Vinton’s record had been the director’s favourite song as a high-school student in 1963.
