Bert Berns and Jerry Ragovoy

Bert Berns, 1929–1967 · Jerry Ragovoy, 1930–2011 · American songwriters and producers

Berns and Ragovoy were two of the architects of 1960s soul, and both wrote under aliases — Berns as Bert Russell, Ragovoy as Norman Meade. Between them they are responsible for “Twist and Shout,” “Piece of My Heart,” “Time Is on My Side” and “Stay with Me.” Berns also produced the Mimms session; he died of heart failure in 1967 at 38, and Ragovoy went on to found the Hit Factory in New York before his death in 2011.
