Bert Berns

American songwriter and record producer · produced the 1964 Atlantic session

Berns is the third name on the credit alongside Burke and Jerry Wexler, and he produced the 28 May 1964 session that put the song on tape. He was one of the great crossover writer-producers of the era, equally at home with soul singers and British beat groups — which is part of why the song reached The Rolling Stones so quickly. Burke's own account is that Berns and Wexler reshaped the tempo of what he brought in, and that the shared credit followed from that.
