Dylan wrote the song for Time Out of Mind, the Daniel Lanois-produced album whose official sessions began at Criteria Studios in Miami in January 1997. His own recording of it therefore existed before Joel’s single appeared — but it was not heard by anyone until the album came out on 30 September 1997, after Joel’s. Dylan is the one constant across every version of this song, and the one most casual listeners never connect to it at all.
