Raitt was four albums into a Warner Bros. career built largely on inhabiting other people’s songs when she cut “Angel from Montgomery” for Streetlights in 1974. She has said the idea that a young man could write his way into the world of a middle-aged woman in a thankless marriage struck her hard as a young feminist, and that the song has probably meant more to her audience than anything else she has recorded. She kept it in the set for decades, often duetting on it with Prine himself. The record is superb and the reading is hers; only the chronology gets misremembered.
