Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Glamorgan in 1951, Tyler built a career on one of the most recognisable voices in British pop — a husky rasp that followed vocal-cord surgery in the 1970s and that carried “It’s a Heartache” and the Jim Steinman–produced “Total Eclipse of the Heart” around the world. Her seventh studio album Hide Your Heart, produced by Desmond Child, carried the first recorded version of “The Best” as its lead single. She has been generous about being eclipsed on it, telling interviewers that Turner did it better than she did — and crediting Turner’s success with restoring her confidence in picking songs. She represented the United Kingdom at Eurovision in 2013 and was appointed MBE in 2022.
