Charles Gustav Binderup was born in Horsens, Denmark, brought to the United States as an infant, and worked as a farmer, merchant and realtor in Minden, Nebraska before representing Nebraska’s 4th district as a Democrat in the U.S. House from 1935 to 1939. He was a committed monetary reformer who helped organize the Constitutional Money League of America, and he used the House floor to argue that the Federal Reserve had deliberately engineered the 1920 downturn. Quotation researchers treat him as an unreliable conduit: he is also the figure credited with popularizing the debunked “Colonial Scrip” story about Benjamin Franklin and the Bank of England.
