1863–1945 · Welsh Liberal statesman; British Prime Minister, 1916–1922
Lloyd George sat for Caernarvon Boroughs from 1890, served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1908 to 1915 — the People’s Budget of 1909 was his — and was Prime Minister from 1916 to 1922. He was Welsh-speaking, raised in Llanystumdwy, and had a reputation as a formidable platform speaker in an era when heckling was part of the job, which is exactly the sort of reputation that attracts other people’s jokes. This one is not his: the poison retort appears nowhere in the sourced sections of his Wikiquote page ↗, in its Misattributed section or anywhere else.
