David W. Orr

David W. Orr (born 1944, Des Moines, Iowa) is an American environmentalist, author, and the Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics Emeritus at Oberlin College. He is a pioneer of “ecological literacy” in higher education and the author of books including Ecological Literacy (1992) and Earth in Mind (1994). The famous “peacemakers, healers, restorers” passage comes from his 1990 college commencement address, later printed as the essay “What Is Education For?”
