Dean Martin

American singer and actor, 1917-1995 · Capitol Records, 1954

Martin recorded “Sway” for Capitol in 1954 with Dick Stabile’s orchestra, backed with “Money Burns a Hole in My Pocket.” It reached number 15 on the Billboard best-seller chart and number six in the UK, and his easy, half-amused delivery is the reason the song has never left circulation. Nothing about the record is a fault — it is simply a cover, sung in English to a new lyric, of a Mexican song that was already on shellac in Spanish.
