Desmond Mpilo Tutu was the Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town and one of the moral leaders of the struggle against apartheid, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. After majority rule he chaired South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. His preaching leaned on vivid, homely images — the elephant and the mouse among them — which is part of why lines like this one travelled so far.
