Diana Vreeland

Diana Vreeland ran the “Why Don’t You…?” column and fashion desk at Harper’s Bazaar from 1936 to 1962, then served as editor-in-chief of Vogue from 1963 to 1971, and afterwards as consultant to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute until her death in 1989. She was a professional aphorist as much as an editor, and dozens of fashion’s most-quoted lines pass through her. This one she explicitly declined to claim — she said she had simply always known it.
