Dinah Washington

1924–1963 · American jazz, blues and R&B singer

Born Ruth Lee Jones, Washington was one of the most popular Black women on record in the 1950s and called herself the Queen of the Blues. Her 1959 Mercury version of the song was her first top-ten pop hit, reaching number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100, and it won the Grammy for Best Rhythm and Blues Performance; it entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. The reading is definitive enough that most listeners assume she introduced the song. The only error in that assumption is chronological.
