Domingo de Monteverde

1773–1832 · Spanish soldier and Captain General of Venezuela

Juan Domingo de Monteverde was a Spanish officer born in Tenerife. He led the royalist campaign that brought down the First Republic of Venezuela in 1812, and he served as Captain General of Venezuela from June 1812 until Simón Bolívar defeated him in 1813. Karen Racine’s biography of his opponent, Francisco de Miranda, quotes him with the prison remark that the “Stalin” line appears to shorten (as reported by Wikiquote).
