Active 1934–1935 · American dance band led by Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, recording for Decca
Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey had worked together as a studio unit since the late 1920s; in 1934 they put a permanent touring band on the road and signed to the newly founded Decca label. On 29 October 1934, in New York, the band recorded Stanley Adams’s English version of Grever’s song with a vocal chorus by Bob Crosby — matrix 38914, issued on Decca 283. It reached number 5 in the American listings that autumn, and it is the earliest recording of the song we can date to a specific day. The brothers fell out and split the band in 1935.
