Dusty Springfield

1939–1999 · English pop and blue-eyed soul singer

Springfield was one of the finest British vocalists of her generation, and her 1966 English-language recording is the version the world remembers — a genuinely towering performance, cut at Philips Studios in London on 9–10 March 1966 with producer Johnny Franz, guitarist Big Jim Sullivan and drummer Bobby Graham. Released on 25 March 1966, it went to No. 1 in the UK and No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and remains her signature record. The only error in the popular account is chronological: she was covering a song that had already topped the Italian chart the previous year.
