Edith Wharton (1862–1937) was an American novelist and short-story writer best known for closely observed novels of Gilded Age New York society, including The House of Mirth (1905), Ethan Frome (1911), and The Age of Innocence (1920), for which she became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. She also wrote prolifically across letters, travel writing, and design criticism, and kept private diaries and journals that biographers have since drawn on for her unguarded voice.
