Edmund Wilson

Edmund Wilson was the most influential American literary critic of the twentieth century — a friend and editor of Fitzgerald, the author of Axel’s Castle and To the Finland Station, and for decades the reviewer whose verdict decided reputations. He wrote for readers rather than for the seminar room, which is why so many of his sentences survive as sayings. It is also why they get shortened: a Wilson paragraph is easy to compress and hard to improve.
