Edward Everett Hale

Edward Everett Hale (1822–1909) was a Boston-born author and Unitarian minister, best remembered for the 1863 story The Man Without a Country. A grandnephew of the patriot Nathan Hale and nephew of the orator Edward Everett, he was a prolific essayist and reformer who served as Chaplain of the U.S. Senate from 1903 until his death. He is the earliest figure on record credited with the “coming together” lines — although no source in his own writing has ever been pinned down.
