Edwin H. Stuart published Typo Graphic, a Pittsburgh magazine for the printing, advertising and graphic-arts trade; Google Books’ catalog record for the journal lists him as its publisher, and the volumes Quote Investigator worked from were scans held by the University of Minnesota. Very little else about him is documented online, and he was not claiming the line as his own — he credited “Tolstoi,” without a source, first in December 1947 and again in May 1950. What the record shows is that those two short items are the earliest known appearances of the saying in this form, which is why Quote Investigator credits Stuart with popularizing it.
