Edwin Hubbell Chapin

1814–1880 · American Universalist preacher & orator

Edwin Hubbell Chapin was a hugely popular American Universalist minister and orator, famed in mid-19th-century New York for the eloquence of his sermons and lectures. He published several volumes of discourses, including Discourses on the Beatitudes (1853), whose polished, aphoristic style is exactly what later made one of his sentences easy to mistake for the work of a lyric poet.
