Elvis Presley

1935–1977 · American singer

Elvis Presley (1935–1977) recorded ‘Suspicious Minds’ in January 1969 with an arrangement almost identical to Mark James’s, and his version so dominated the song that it became inseparable from him. Released that August, it hit No. 1 and stood as his 18th and last chart-topper — the record that proved his ‘68 Comeback was real. His performance is genuinely definitive; the only error is chronological, assuming that a song this bound up with Elvis must have started with him. It started a year earlier, on a single that failed.
