Florence Welch and Isabella Summers formed the band in London in 2007, and their version — titled “You’ve Got the Love” and produced by Charlie Hugall — became one of the defining British singles of its decade. It first appeared as a B-side to “Dog Days Are Over” on Moshi Moshi Records in December 2008, went out on Island as a UK digital single in January 2009, was reissued physically in November 2009, and reached No. 5 on the UK Singles Chart across 30 weeks. The record is genuinely wonderful and the band have never hidden that it is a cover; the error is entirely in the listening public’s chronology, not in anything Florence + the Machine claimed.
