Franklin D. Roosevelt

1882–1945 · 32nd President of the United States

Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882–1945) was the 32nd President of the United States, elected to four terms and serving from 1933 until his death in 1945. He took office at the depth of the Great Depression, and his First Inaugural Address — best remembered for “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself” — framed the New Deal’s moral case against the unchecked pursuit of profit. The line about happiness comes from that same speech.
