Frida Kahlo

1907–1954 · Mexican painter & diarist

Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter known for her intensely personal self-portraits, drawn from a lifetime of physical suffering after a streetcar accident at eighteen left her with lasting injuries. In her final years she kept an illustrated diary, and in 1953 her right leg was amputated below the knee. It was beside a drawing in that diary that she wrote the defiant line about feet and wings — making this, unlike most quotes pinned to her name online, unmistakably her own words.
