Friedrich Nietzsche

1844–1900 · German philosopher & classical philologist

Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900) was a German philosopher and philologist whose works — Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Beyond Good and Evil, On the Genealogy of Morality — attacked egalitarian and ‘herd’ morality and championed hierarchy, self-overcoming, and the individual. Because he genuinely was anti-egalitarian, punchy modern one-liners on ‘equality’ are easily pinned on him without a source. His aphoristic, densely argued style rarely reduces to a tidy epigram like this one.
