George Francis Allen compiled “Buddha’s Words of Wisdom: The Buddhists’ Companion Book” (London: George Allen & Unwin, 1959), a daybook of “365 Maxims and Utterances Attributed to Gotama Buddha.” It is the earliest known source to place “Peace comes from within” in the Buddha’s mouth. As his own subtitle admits, the sayings are “attributed to” the Buddha — a caveat later reposters dropped, hardening a loose attribution into a firm one.
