Born Garrett Mimms in Ashland, West Virginia and raised in Philadelphia on church choirs and gospel groups, Mimms formed the Enchanters in 1961 and moved the group to New York in 1963, where they fell in with Bert Berns and Jerry Ragovoy. “Cry Baby” was the result, and it made him one of the first singers to carry an unmistakably gospel intensity onto the pop chart. He kept recording through the 1960s and 1970s, then turned to gospel ministry in the 1980s before returning to music in 2007.
