Gene Fowler was born in Denver in 1890 and died in West Los Angeles in 1960. He came up through The Denver Post and a run of New York papers — the Daily Mirror, the Evening Journal, the New York American, The Morning Telegraph — then became one of the highest-paid screenwriters in 1930s and 1940s Hollywood, with credits including What Price Hollywood? and The Call of the Wild. He wrote biographies of John Barrymore, Mack Sennett and Jimmy Durante, and the memoir Skyline; the quips about writing that carry his name today are mostly attached to him by later anthologists rather than found in those books.
