George MacDonald

George MacDonald was a Scottish author and minister whose fantasy and fiction — Phantastes, Lilith, the Curdie books — profoundly influenced C.S. Lewis, who called him his “master.” In Annals of a Quiet Neighbourhood (1867) he argued that we should speak of being souls rather than merely having them. That affinity is exactly why a slogan he never quite wrote drifted onto Lewis’s name a century later.
