Giancarlo Bigazzi was a Florentine lyricist, composer and producer whose fingerprints are on a startling share of Italian pop’s international exports. His partnership with Umberto Tozzi began in the mid-1970s and produced “Ti amo”, “Tu” and “Gloria”; he also co-wrote Raf’s “Self Control”, which later became another Branigan hit, and Marcella Bella’s “Montagne verdi”. The Italian record of the single credits him with the words and Tozzi with the music, and names him as producer of the album it opened. He went on to score the Academy Award-winning Mediterraneo, and died in 2012.
