Grand Funk Railroad recorded the song for their 1974 album All the Girls in the World Beware!!!, with Jimmy Ienner producing. Capitol issued it as a single (Capitol 4002) on December 9, 1974, and it reached number three on the US Billboard Hot 100 on February 22, 1975 — strong enough to place sixth on Billboard’s year-end Hot 100 for 1975. It is a superb, thoroughly earned hit; the only error is chronological, since the band did not originate the song and never claimed to have written it.
