H.G. Wells

1866–1946 · English novelist, historian & futurist — “father of science fiction”

Herbert George Wells was one of the most influential English writers of his era, author of The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds and The Invisible Man, plus sweeping works of history and social prophecy. This line comes from The Mind at the End of its Tether (1945), the bleak pamphlet he wrote near the end of his life — cancer-stricken in wartime London — concluding that humanity had run its course. He died the following August, in 1946.
