H. Jackson Brown Jr. was an American author from Tennessee who found enormous success with inspirational aphorism collections. His 1990 book P.S. I Love You gathered sayings he attributed to his mother, Sarah Frances Brown — and it is the earliest known home of this sailing passage. Brown’s later Life’s Little Instruction Book (1991) became a #1 bestseller.
