H.L. Mencken

1880–1956 · American journalist, essayist & satirist

Henry Louis Mencken was a Baltimore newspaperman, critic, and satirist known as the “Sage of Baltimore.” His multi-volume Prejudices essays and his coverage of American culture made him one of the most influential and quotable American writers of the early twentieth century. His sharp aphorisms are frequently repackaged and, as here, misattributed to other famous names.
