Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman escaped slavery in Maryland in 1849 and returned roughly thirteen times over the next decade to guide some seventy enslaved people north — earning the name “Moses.” She later served the Union Army as scout, spy and nurse, and spent her final decades in Auburn, New York, active in the women’s-suffrage movement. Her contemporaries confirmed the boast behind this quote: none of the fugitives in her charge was ever recaptured.
