Harris Weinstock

1854–1922 · California merchant & industrial-relations reformer

Harris Weinstock (1854–1922) was a London-born, California-raised merchant who co-founded the Sacramento department store that became Weinstock’s. A civic reformer, he served as California’s first State Market Commissioner and, from 1913, on President Woodrow Wilson’s U.S. Commission on Industrial Relations. His May 1914 remark about friends who “bring out the best” in one another is the documented root of the line later miscredited to Henry Ford.
