Red Sanders coached football at Vanderbilt (1940–42 and 1946–48) and then at UCLA (1949–57), where his 1954 team was named national champion by the Coaches Poll and the Football Writers Association of America. He was known for the single-wing offense and for a dry, quotable wit — the source of the line that later made another coach famous. He died in 1958 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1996.
