Henry Stanley Haskins

Henry Stanley Haskins was a New York stockbroker and, as Wikiquote ↗ puts it, a man of letters — a securities trader who wrote aphorisms on the side. His only well-known book, Meditations in Wall Street, appeared in 1940 with no author's name on it at all, carrying instead an introduction by the essayist Albert Jay Nock. Quote Investigator ↗ reports that Haskins had a checkered record on the Street, and that by 1947 The New York Times was identifying him as the author — by which time his best line had already begun drifting toward more respectable owners.
