Heywood Hale Broun

1918–2001 · CBS sports commentator, sportswriter & actor

Heywood Hale Broun — son of the columnist Heywood Broun and the feminist Ruth Hale — wrote for PM and the New York Star before CBS hired him in 1966 as a roving sports essayist. For roughly two decades, in loud jackets and a “merry mustache,” he filed Saturday-night features on everything from Super Bowls to county-fair oddities. He was a skeptic of sport’s moral claims, arguing repeatedly in 1970s lectures that character is formed long before the whistle blows.
