Hillary Rodham Clinton

b. 1947 · U.S. Secretary of State 2009–2013 · Senator, First Lady, presidential nominee

Born Hillary Diane Rodham in Chicago in 1947, she trained as a lawyer before becoming First Lady of the United States, then a U.S. Senator from New York, and then the 67th Secretary of State. The Bishkek remark comes from the middle of that last job, on a swing through Central Asia. Her impatience with the fashion question was not a one-off pose: minutes earlier in the same conversation, advising a young Kyrgyz law student, she had observed that “when a man walks into a courtroom it’s rare for someone to say, ‘Oh, look what he is wearing’” — but that a woman will be noticed.
